«I was taking a break at one of those old chessboard tables during my trip to New-York city. It was a hard and long day, my first in NYC ever. Alexandra had some gigantic blisters and she begged for a stop. So we stopped.
We were right in front of the Columbus Park, close to the Chinatown. Never seen such a thing, so many kids playing in a park during the middle of the week, on a gloomy afternoon. Around my place, kids play in barns, not community park. Anyways, there was a lot of kids playing there, mostly teens trying to look cool on their skateboards and shirtless. Skating all around, over some garbage bins, pushing each others.
There was this basketball field too, splitted in two. Tall guys playing in team, saying fuck each two words and on the other half there was this young kid. He was around 8, with a bright purple shirt that caught my eye, all alone with this giant ball. He was pretty good, actually.
As I sat there I said: « Shit this kid is awesome, I have to get at least one good shot of him.» So I grabbed my cam and left Alex alone with her blisters for a moment. I sat quietlty on the ground, my back leaning on the concrete wall and watched him for a while. He saw me. I could see he was confused for a moment and then he forgot about me and started playing normally. I got a few shots before a friend came to play with him.
I like this one because he is alone with the ball and the basket. The ball looks like it weights a ton and his expression is just priceless. So much determination in those almond-shaped eyes. So much strengh in those small arms. So much life.
I left a few minutes after the friend joined and when older guys came to took their ball away and take their part of the field I realised I had the chance to catch something precious.
The picture was originaly in colors but I desaturated it with photoshop and fixed a little bit the curves and levels but that’s all. No cropping what-so-ever and I shinked the picture down a little. This is digital and I don’t own an amazing camera but I did the focus myself. Left the other technical stuff to the automatic part of the cam, I was more concentring on the action than on the setting, I guess I’ll learn to do both as I practice.
I don’t expect anything with this shot, there’s a lot of amazing artists around here. I learned the few things I know from the people here. I learned to love photography right here. So that might sound cheesy (way too cheesy) but I want to give this shot to Severin Koller (coxi) who left deviantart not so long ago. My shot has nothing to do with what he does, but meh. He was one the first artist I watched on DA and I was glad to see him improve with time. Long live to you, smart ass. I’ll keep an eye on you.
Okay, enough of this sentimental moment, and leave some comments so I can improve. NOW.»
